Courting jesters, football dads, and links

In today's blog, a couple of items from the "you can't make this up category."

If you've watched Florida State football for any length of time this year -- like, even just 10 seconds -- you've probably seen that big, bald dude jumping and gyrating and behaving like a hyena on the Seminoles' sidelines.

His name is Vic Viloria, and he is FSU's strength and conditioning coach. It's kind of distracting, but hey ... different strokes for different folks.

Apparently David Cutcliffe isn't a fan of the supercharged sideline antics by a strength coach. After watching it in person last Saturday in a pummeling at Doak Campbell Stadium, he watched Alabama's curb-stomping of Mississippi State and saw the same routine from Crimson Tide S&C man Scott Cochran.

Instead of privately stewing, he hopped onto Twitter and pecked out some thinly-veiled bashing of both guys.

This was kind of a peripheral story last night, apparently Cutcliffe was miffed by something at the end of Duke's 48-7 loss to FSU and reportedly refused to shake the hands of a couple of coaches. He didn't issue a comment after the game though and was fairly professional in handling the defeat.

And here's where it gets really good: Viloria, after hearing of Cutcliffe's disapproval, apparently changed his Facebook profile picture to this:

This is the kind of friction you don't usually see in the ACC. More, please.

Something that is present just about everywhere is nutjob football dads. Al Goden had to deal with one last week when the father of defensive tackle Luther Robinson called in to a radio show and unleashed a profanity-laced rant toward Golden.

Robinson, a redshirt junior who was recruited by Shannon, said he was genuinely happy with his current role as a co-backup to starter Olsen Pierre, and that he was putting all his efforts into beating Virginia Tech. His father, Luther Sr., called WQAM host Joe Rose early in the week and said Golden was “a liar” and what he had to say on the radio every Monday was “a bunch of crap,” not to mention the dad’s expletive.

The father complained that coaches were favoring the recently recruited players over Shannon’s.

“I just want to first start off by apologizing for what he said,” Robinson said. “He was just looking out for me and not really looking out for the team. … I talked to him. I told him that he was wrong for doing it and that we need to cut that out and get to business. He’s just excitable. He’s one of those dads.”

Robinson said his father “apologized to the coaching staff. He called them up and said he got caught in the moment.”

Talk about an awkward moment between player and coach.

A few more Wednesday links:

-- Duke's defense, shredded by Florida State, prepares for another trip to the cheese grader Saturday night.

Speaking of Cutcliffe, Duke fans better prepare for his name to be mentioned for a lot of jobs (and justifiably so). My best bet: Kentucky.

-- Hey Clemson fans, you think your football team has had some bad breaks over the years? Maryland says hi.

Caleb Rowe, a true freshman who began the season as the Terps’ third-string signal-caller, tore the ACL in his left knee during Saturday’s 20-17 loss at Boston College and will miss the remainder of the season, Maryland Coach Randy Edsall announced Sunday.

“It’s very unusual,” Edsall said during a conference call. “I don’t know something like this has ever happened to a team at that position. With this team, they understand and they feel bad for Caleb, but they know we still have games that we want to win. Everyone will have to do their part to contribute a little more and do a little more.”

Rowe, who was prepared to redshirt this season through Maryland’s first six games, received his first career start on Saturday only because Perry Hills and Devin Burns suffered season-ending injuries the previous weekend against North Carolina State. Hills tore his ACL just before halftime and Burns suffered a Lisfranc injury that was announced Thursday.

Add senior C.J. Brown, the presumed preseason starter who tore his ACL during a non-contact drill this summer, to the mix, and that makes four scholarship quarterbacks with season-ending injuries, three of which are ACL-related.

-- Jim Young of The ACC Sports Journal ranks the ACC's teams and finds a gaping chasm between FSU/Clemson and everyone else.

It's OK. Help is on the way with Pitt and Syracuse.

-- Andy Staples gives his take on the NCAA's "sweeping" changes intended to crack down hard on rule-breaking schools and coaches.

-- And Jeff Schultz of the AJC hangs out with Dan Radakovich as he cleans out his Georgia Tech office while basically saying, "See ya, wouldn't want to be ya."
