Brock Huard's lunacy, and links

Sometimes it's amusing when you hear a coach or a player or whoever, in the face of some criticism they don't like, use the "he never played the game" dig.

While there's absolutely legitimacy to the notion that someone who has never played football might be incapable of opining on football, it's also true that people who did play the game can look like idiots, too.

The beauty of it is it's still about doing your homework. For every clueless sideline bimbo who's incapable of asking a relevant question at halftime, there's a "football guy" in the booth who doesn't bother spending time to be informed.

Bob Davie was awful as a color guy. Mark May is dreadful in studio. Robert Smith's brilliance as a running back hasn't translated to brilliance as an analyst.

Haven't seen enough of Brock Huard as a broadcaster to put him in the dud category, but his ranking of the Top 10 quarterbacks in college football is a pretty big strike against him.

This article is part of ESPN's premium content offerings, so some of you might not be able to access it.

But the gist of it is this: Huard ranks E.J. Manuel (No. 5) and Logan Thomas (No. 7) well ahead of Tajh Boyd, who is in the "others receiving votes" category.

I laughed.

A few Friday links:

-- The latest injury report for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies’ beleaguered offensive line got a little bit of good injury news for the Clemson game.

Virginia Tech listed left guard David Wang (knee/ankle) as probable for Saturday’s game on its injury report Thursday. Backup center/guard Caleb Farris (ankle) has been ruled out.

Wang, a junior, has not played in three of the last four games because of an ankle injury suffered against Pittsburgh last month. He started at North Carolina two weeks ago but had to leave the game after adding a knee injury to his troubles.

Getting Wang back is a boost to an interior line that’s been hit hard by injuries. With center Andrew Miller out for the season with a broken fibula, utility lineman Michael Via will slide over from guard to start at center. Brent Benedict is expected to start at right guard in Via’s place.

It’s unclear who will start at left guard — Matt Arkema or Wang. They’re listed as co-No. 1′s on the team’s online depth chart. (Arkema is also the backup center.) Wang got first-team reps but was in a blue, limited-work jersey during the open viewing period at Tuesday’s practice.

-- The Sporting News has a midseason update in college football, with a great one-liner here:

The Coastal Division will form an all-star team to take on—and lose to—Florida State in the ACC title game.

-- At Boston College, the players voice their support for Magnum.

-- In Miami, Al Golden accidentally gave Canes baseball coach a 5:30 a.m. wake-up text the other day.

Football coach Al Golden texted baseball coach Jim Morris at 5:30 a.m. Monday, “and wanted to know how I was feeling,” said Morris, whose Hurricanes started fall baseball practice Tuesday.

“I was thinking, ‘Now, why is he texting me at 5:30 in the morning? There’s nothing wrong.’

“So, I texted him back, ‘I’m fine. But out of curiosity, why are you asking?’

So he texted me back, ‘Sorry, [I] meant to text Stephen Morris, not Jim Morris.’

“I’m not playing quarterback,” Morris assured reporters, who had just finished their news conference with Golden and selected players.
