Urban Meyer and the Circle of Trust
Not a huge fan of Urban Meyer, but I'm having a hard time experiencing much shock and awe over the supposedly earth-shattering revelations contained in this Sporting News article by Matt Hayes.
Nothing against Hayes, who's always been a really good college football writer. But when I read "three-month investigation" and the breathless headline that alleges the Meyer-induced destruction of a football program, I expect more than what was contained in the article.
The meat of this story is: Meyer played favorites, was lax on discipline and made up a few injuries to avoid publicizing positive drug tests by some of his players.
Really? Hayes took three months and found one guy who would talk on-the-record about his dislike of Meyer's tactics?
It's at this point that you're compelled to bring in Dan Hawkins for the priceless "It's Division I footbal1!" rant.
Meyer gives a response here. Predictably, some sports writers have painted these revelations as apocalyptic.
There's good and bad to recruiting elite athletes. Part of the bad is a sense of entitlement and the prima donna complex. Fans of Miami would probably attest to the drawbacks. Meyer might've fanned the flames of this entitlement mentality, might've left a shaky culture in Gainesville, but this stuff about him destroying Florida football is a bit much.
Last we checked, Florida football wasn't in a particularly good state at the end of Ron Zook's tenure. Last we checked, Meyer delivered two BCS title trophies to the Gators' trophy case.
Dude is a jerk, no doubt. And certainly some of the dude's methods are questionable. But there's a lot of fluff presented as stop-the-presses news in this article.
And we'll close with one measly link.
To borrow a line from Verne Lundquist: Oh ... my ... goodness.
