Grab the parkas for Miami, and links

On the Miami Herald web site this morning is this critical weather development under the "Breaking News" heading:

Cold front to sweep through, with low in the 50s

Seriously.

Reminds me of a trip to Boston a few years back. Was there covering Clemson's basketball team for a February game, and the weather was nasty. A friend, and native of the area, tells me they're expecting a blizzard the next day. So I grab a Boston Globe, thinking there'd be plenty of coverage.

No stories on the front page or inside pages. But up in the right corner of the front page, in the little weather box with letters so small you can barely read them, is this:

"Tonight. Windy, high of 18. Tomorrow: Blizzard conditions."

Probably safe to leave the parkas at home for the Orange Bowl...

Also in the Miami Herald, Clemson gets the royal treatment when it arrives for on-site bowl preparations.

“That’s a big bus! Golly!’’ said amazed cornerback Coty Sensabaugh, a senior from Kingsport, Tenn., who, like many of his teammates, approached the buses for a closer inspection.

Then they noticed the long orange carpet that led to those buses. One by one, the handsomely dressed Atlantic Coast Conference champions walked down that orange path like college royalty.

Orange Bowl Committee members greeted them with oranges and black nylon backpacks with OB souvenirs. “That’s when you really know you achieved something in life, when you get to walk on the carpet,’’ 6-6, 255-pound senior defensive end Kourtnei Brown said.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen says the Tigers and Mountaineers are mirror images of each other.

"Probably their D-line is as talented as we have seen,'' Holgorsen said. "Andre Branch is a guy that when he turns it on can get upfield much like a guy that we have [Bruce Irvin] on defense. They have a lot of secondary guys that are athletic and do a good job of covering the space and closing on the ball quickly.''

Here's a piece on West Virginia's defense, which might not have been as bad as it seemed this season.

Interesting piece on Holgorsen's unsigned contract and some possible conflicts about the presence of a non-compete clause.

The Belk Bowl was shocked to see so few Clemson fans at last year's bowl in Charlotte, but N.C. State faithful showed up in big numbers to last night's game.

Forty days ago, the Wolfpack was at 5-5 after an ugly loss at Boston College. Needing wins over Clemson and Maryland to secure bowl eligibility, it didn't look good and plenty of folks were wondering if Tom O'Brien would survive.

Then came the 37-13 smashing of the Tigers. Then came forty-two unanswered points in a 56-41 win over the Terps.

Then last night's win over Louisville, and suddenly everything looks a lot different for O'Brien and the Wolfpack. N.C. State is expected to return 35 of 44 on the current two-deep, so this team could have something to say about the Atlantic Division race.

In the AJC, a few Clemson players command a lot of respect from their counterparts at Georgia Tech.

Brandon Thompson won't be on the field when Georgia Tech plays Clemson next fall. The Tigers defensive tackle will be safely in the NFL, unable to blow up Tech option plays or crumple up pockets. You won't hear any Yellow Jackets lamenting his absence.

Thompson, a defensive tackle, was a popular choice among Tech players for the top player the team faced this season.

"He's going to do well," guard Omoregie Uzzi said of Thompson and the NFL. "Just a strong guy, plays with great pad level. Plays with great effort, too."
