The Georgia Tech hangover


A lot is made, and legitimately so, about the benefits of having extra time to prepare for Georgia Tech.

Under Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets are 0-3 in bowl games. You have to think defenses benefited from weeks of extra practice reps against Johnson's flexbone.

But what about the importance of extra time recovering from games against the Yellow Jackets?

A couple of results from this season indicate the next game on the schedule isn't easy. Virginia beat Georgia Tech at home ... and lost at home to N.C. State a week later. Miami smashed Georgia Tech at home ... and lost at home to Virginia nine days later.

Three years ago, Dabo Swinney bagged perhaps the most important win of his interim tenure when the Tigers went to Boston College and won a close one. The open date preceding that trip (and following a home loss to Georgia Tech) was essential.

So how important was this year's open date that followed the 31-17 loss in Atlanta?

Here are the past four seasons' results of ACC teams in the games after facing Georgia Tech:

Sept. 6: Boston College loses to GT 19-16 at BC; open date, beats UCF

Sept. 13: VT beats GT 20-17 in Blacksburg; wins 20-17 at UNC week later

Oct. 4: Duke loses 27-0 at GT; open date, loses 49-31 at home to Miami

Oct. 18: Clemson loses at home to GT 21-17; open date, wins at BC
